the fish of maui    maori legends say the demigod maui hauled a giant fish from the ocean floor while fishing from his canoe   te waka a maui   that fish is known today as the north island of new zealand
but scientists claim aotearoa and its spectacular mountains are the result of interaction of two major tectonic plates     the maori dont necessarily agree   they have ancient legends to explain the birth of these beautiful mountains
